When Bernini’s father came to Rome in 1606 his eight year old son was already recognized as a precocious talent and when Gian Lorenzo was 21 three important sculptural works were commissioned by the powerful Cardinal Scipione Borghesi,  then he began to work for Pope Urban VIII who told him ’You are made for Rome and Rome For You’. With the exception of a miserable secondment  to the court of Louis XIV Bernini remained in Rome for the next 58 years, transforming the art of sculpture. ‘The Extraordinary life of Gian Lorenzo Bernini’ looks at Bernini’s work in the context 17th century Rome, the scholarship, the intrigues and intense rivalries
