Despite the ravages of time, Civil War and the taxman, the English country house has always exemplified the style and elegance of gracious living.  Developing out of the fortified mediaeval Castle, country houses gradually became treasure trove of paintings, furniture and objects surrounded by splendid gardens. Here the great dynasties could show off their wealth and power. We will explore the fabulous show-cases ( Burghley House, Blenheim Palace, Kedleston etc) admiring the designs of Robert Adam and the Capability Brown gardens. But we will visit too some more homely and picturesque creations.
